As someone who has been involved in the real estate industry for many years, I’ve always been drawn to the top success stories out there. It works to keep us motivated, since real estate is sometimes a challenge to make solid money in (particularly early on).
There are plenty of examples out there of people having success, but here are a few that have inspired me with their story.
Shaun Conlin
In the 1990s, Conlin took a chance on himself by moving from Ireland to the United States. He came with pretty much no money, and took a role as a janitor once he arrived stateside. It was a tough first few years, but he started to really get into the opportunities real estate provided.
He is completely self-made, and he even had his own TV show on CNBC called The Deed Chicago. Without any formal education in the beginning, he has even gone back to college and picked up a degree to show that learning never stops.
Carl Berg
Any person worth over $1 billion thanks to his real estate work is definitely someone to keep an eye on. He grew up in rural New Mexico, and he had a very modest childhood. He found a way to get through college working odd jobs, and his big break came when he met a home builder who offered him an entry-level office job.
He then quickly moved up in the company, branching out by buying and renting Silicon Valley buildings for offices. Real estate is not the only way he has made money, as he has taken the money he has made in real estate to invest in venture capital as well. He is a perfect example of someone who jumped into the market at the right time, and never looked back.
Leon Charney
The story of Leon Charney is one that most people are familiar with, as he turned into one of the best real estate moguls in his time. He didn’t have the same type of wealth as a lot of people starting out, so he had to make things work in the early days himself.
He focused early on with education, putting himself through law school any way he could. Once he got into commercial real estate, he started buying a property in the Time Square area of Manhattan.
His success in real estate evolved into him having success in other walks of life as well. From being a talk show host to a political adviser, he is certainly a perfect rags to riches tale everyone should be familiar with.
Dottie Herman
Many people refer to her as the most successful female real estate tycoon ever. She was motivated early on when her mother died in a car accident. She was just a child but began focusing on career paths that would allow her to make her own decisions.
Currently worth about $270 million, Herman is known as the richest self-made woman in the history of real estate. She runs Douglas Elliman real estate after purchasing it a while back.
